FICTIONAL TEMPLATE DEMO / FIELD NOTES

From a long list of capabilities to one useful point of view.

From a long list of capabilities to one useful point of view.

Field Notes is an invented advisory practice. This case is an illustrative design exercise—not a client engagement, testimonial or measured result.

Context: a list without an entry point

The fictional practice described its work through methods: facilitation, research, organisational design and strategic planning. Each discipline was meaningful internally, but the list asked a prospective buyer to work out where to begin. The exercise started with that gap between professional vocabulary and a useful first conversation.

Challenge: expertise is not a buying journey

Internal disciplines rarely match the questions a buyer brings. A leadership team wondering how to choose a direction does not necessarily know which method it needs. Simply shortening the list would hide useful depth. The challenge was to keep the substance while making the front door easier to understand.

Approach: organise around decisions

We mapped possible buyer questions: What needs to change? Which direction should we choose? How do we bring people with us? Capabilities were then grouped around those decisions rather than departments. A clear narrative connected the practice’s point of view to the work, with plain-language explanations of what each engagement could and could not do.

Illustrative outputs

The opening message becomes: “Make a difficult organisational decision easier to understand and act on.” Three distinct sample offers—Decision Mapping, Direction Workshop and Change Narrative—give the practice a legible structure. An honest case narrative explains the reasoning without claiming proof that does not exist. These are fictional outputs, not evidence of results.
